Here comes the sun…… well that’s what we are all hoping for anyway! Now is the time most of us start to think about a new pair of shades.

The new styles for summer 2012 are arriving daily and the bulk of the Ray Bans are already here and looking good. Still keeping with traditional aviator and wayfarer styles, but a lot more wearable shapes have been added also. This is one of our most popular sunglass collections so we do carry a large selection of different models and colours. However, if there is a particular model you want and we don’t have it in stock, no problem, we can always order it in for you.

And remember…Sunglasses are for life, not just for holidays! Lol

35th Anniversary - Eye Dream and Orthokeratology

The 5^th and final week of the 35th birthday celebrations for Graham Coe Opticians in Burton Street. This is the last of our fantastic offers which will take us up to 35 days of amazing deals. We hope we have managed to tell you a bit about ourselves and informed you about various aspects of optical frames and lenses, and maybe given you a little insight about some of the differences by being an Independent Opticians.

Contact lenses can make the world of difference to those who need vision correction. Those who play sports where spectacle frames are just not practical can find their co-ordination dramatically improved with contacts, while self-conscious children can find their confidence (and possibly marks) boosted with vision correction they want to wear. We have all seen those photographs of special occasions where the spectacles look wrong with the outfit, and have been on nights out when glasses fog up when you walk into the pub!

Contact lenses have improved dramatically over the past few years in terms of the materials used to manufacture them and in the technology used to design and fit them. Difficulties with certain prescriptions, such as astigmatism and presbyopia (the loss of near focus that comes with middle age) have to a large extent been overcome, while comfort and oxygen transmissibility have much improved. Cheaper production costs have meant that disposable lenses are now the norm, which have led to further improvements in comfort and as well as lower infection rates. Further benefits, such as the UV filters incorporated into Acuvue lenses, help to protect the eyes.

Advances are not just restricted to the soft contact lenses. For those who need rigid gas permeable lenses, our Topographer can map the contours of the front of the eye to give a computer generated image on which we can virtually try different rigid lenses and to tailor them to give the best fitting. This also allows us to fit more specialized lenses for conditions such as keratoconus, and for those with very uneven corneas, scleral lenses.

ORTHOKERATOLOGY

Wearing contact lenses to correct vision is, in most cases, fairly straight forward. You wear the lenses during the day and take them out before going to bed. For many people this works well, but for those who work, for example, in dusty environments or who are involved in contact sports or swimming, wearing lenses during the day can make their eyes feel uncomfortable and increase their risk of eye problems. Orthokeratology, commonly abbreviated to Ortho K, turns this on its head. Lenses are worn overnight and then removed in the morning, leaving the eyes free of lenses throughout the day but still with the right vision correction! It works by using contact lenses to carefully flatten the cornea by less than a hair’s breadth into a shape that will correct short-sight. Because the cornea is very flexible, when the lenses are taken out the cornea slowly starts to return to its normal shape, and so the lenses need to be worn again the following night, although many people find the effect lasts long enough to need them only every other night. Crucially, unlike laser surgery, this makes the procedure completely reversible and any future changes in prescription can easily be taken into account. It is often seen as a cheaper, and changeable, alternative to laser surgery.

The idea has actually been around for some 3000 years, when the Chinese found that sleeping with sandbags on their eyes could improve their vision long enough to go out and catch dinner. Today’s technique has been refined somewhat since then, (thank goodness!) becoming available in the 1960’s, but never having mass appeal as it was expensive and complicated. New technology has now made the fitting process simpler and more accurate, while developments in the lens materials and cleaning solutions have greatly reduced any complications. This also means Ortho K has become much more affordable.

There is also anecdotal evidence that Ortho K can slow down the progression of short-sight in teenagers. This is to date unproven, but the technique has support of the Institute of Optometry, which is recommending Ortho K to some patients.

35th Anniversary - Impressions Lenses

It is week 4 of birthday celebrations at Graham Coe Opticians Burton Street, and we would like to say ‘thank you’ to all who have so kindly wished us well on our 35^th anniversary. Thanks also to those who have passed by and made such kind comments on our window displays. We are often asked who does them and the answer is ‘we do’.

This week’s tempting offer is on Impressions lenses. A product family of Rodenstock, our main lens supplier. Rodenstock has been at the forefront of technologically innovative lenses for more than 130 years. And of course there is no point having your high definition lenses without putting a clear coating on them. You may have seen recent TV advertising of anti-reflection coating, and Rodenstocks ‘Solitaire’ is one of the top coatings available. It’s the third week of the 35 year anniversary celebrations

of the opening of Graham Coe Opticians on Burton Street and

‘thank you’ to everyone who visited us last week to try the

Etnia Design collection. This week it is even more

exciting….The UVEX Collection!

Wrap around prescription lenses are of course not just ideal for sports, but also for protection. This can be from the elements if you suffer with dry eyes or work outdoors. Most prescriptions can now be curved and are available tinted, clear and in photochromic materials. Last year Graham Coe Opticians and our sister practice Langrick and Coe were 2nd and 3rd in the country for Rodenstock sport lens dispensings, so it really is an area in which we are very experienced.

Pure adrenalin: The UVEX collection covers the sport spectacles segment including a selection of children’s sport spectacles, sport spectacles that can be glazed with correction lenses, and lifestyle sunglasses. 35th Anniversary - Etnia

It’s the second week of the 35 year anniversary celebrations of

the opening of Graham Coe Opticians on Burton Street and ‘thank you’

to everyone who visited us last week to try the Porsche Design collection.

This week it is even more exciting….ETNIA!

This is definitely one of the Practice’s favourite collections. It is full of

bright and unusual colours that look amazing. The shapes and tones

compliment so many faces it is hard to single out just one pair to have.

Each pair of stunning Etnia spectacles has its own individuality and

personality to enhance any aspect of your daily wardrobe and mood.

Developed in Barcelona and produced in Italy, the Etnia plastics

are made by mixing pulverized natural cotton with acetone to create

a paste (acetate is the only plastic that is not petroleum based as it is

mostly cotton). Colour is then added using various pressing processes,

then it is cured, cut, turned, laminated and set in moulds where they are

pressed into block form and aged for a period of 12 weeks. When these blocks

are removed from the moulds they are cut to the desired measurements.

Finally, they are placed into tumbling polishing machines for up to a week.

In 1849, the plastics manufacturer Mazzucchelli Spa opened in the

north of Italy in Castiglione Olona. Hilary and Martin both visited this

factory a few years ago whilst at one of the main trade fairs in Milan. They could not believe the amount of work and time that goes into

processing the acetate for creating the beautiful patterns. This

manufacturer is the leader in its field, and most of the material in the

frames we stock is sourced from here. The founders, Santino

Mazzucchelli and his son Pompeo, began working cellulose nitrate

sheets in the late 1800’s. The idea was to transform the sheets into

combs, brushes, buttons and hair ornaments. These entrepreneurs

were able to establish a company that would influence the development of bio plastic material on a global scale. Mazzucchelli grew to become the largest producer of cellulose acetate and cellulose nitrate sheets worldwide. Today, this warm and

aesthetically pleasing material is used for making frames for eyeglasses, hair ornaments, snowboard components,

jewellery, and other accessories. Yes, you guessed it, another family

business, and this one lasting more than 6 generations!

35th Anniversary - Porsche Design

Well ladies and gentleman, here we are again celebrating another very special big birthday…35 years of optical expertise in Melton Mowbray. We are hosting 35 days of fantastic promotions and prizes galore, generously offered by, and in support of us from some of the top optical manufacturers in the world in recognition of our achievement. For those of you who have never been to us - who are we? Where are we? And what makes us different?

Established in 1976 our Burton Street practice was the concept of

Graham after working in London and then Asfordby Road for Curry

and Paxton. He wanted to offer professional and personal eyecare

offering the highest quality in lens technology and modern frame

designs. Focusing on this service the practice grew and he opened

his second practice with Optometrist Gill Langrick in Oakham in 1988. In 1996 his daughter Hilary who after qualifying as an Optician also

worked in London and Manchester, then joined him. A few years later

his son Martin joined the team as the main Optometrist making it a

truly family run business. The advantage of this is that we all

share the same ethos in providing the best for each patient and that

doesn’t necessarily mean the most expensive! It’s about value for

money and that also includes service. We appreciate everyone has different budgets, priorities and needs and that’s one of the things

which makes us unique, Because you are!! Over the next few weeks

aside from telling you about all the exciting offers we are running, we

hope to give a little insight as to what makes us tick, how we find such great spectacle ranges which we receive so many positive comments on and why we attract people from Birmingham, Nottingham and France!! to name just a few.
